Raspberry picking season in New Zealand

Raspberries need cool nights to set good fruit, and that is why the self-pick raspberry farms on this site cluster in Canterbury and the Manawatū-Whanganui district rather than in the warm north. There are raspberries around Auckland too, but the cooler districts carry the crop more reliably.

When

The main run is summer, roughly December through February, with an autumn tail where autumn-fruiting varieties are grown. Those varieties crop on the current season’s canes and can carry a farm into March or April, which is later than any other berry here except in the deep south.

If a listing shows raspberries running into autumn, that is why, and the late fruit is often the best of the year.

The test that never fails

A ripe raspberry leaves its core on the plant. It slides off the white plug as a hollow thimble with almost no pull. If the core comes away inside the berry, it was not ready, and no amount of time in the punnet will fix it.

This is the most reliable ripeness test of any fruit on this site. Use it and ignore colour, which varies by variety.

Picking without destroying the row

Take the berry between thumb and finger and pull gently straight off. Do not grip hard: a ripe raspberry will collapse in your fingers if you squeeze.

Work one side of a row at a time rather than reaching through the canes. Snapping a cane costs the plant the rest of its season, and raspberry canes break more easily than they look.

Long sleeves are worth it. Raspberry canes carry fine prickles that catch rather than stab, and an hour of reaching through them is uncomfortable in a t-shirt.

Getting them home

Raspberries are the most fragile thing you can pick. Shallow container, single layer if you can manage it, never decant, and into the fridge as soon as you are home.

Do not wash them until you use them: water gets into the hollow centre and they go soft within hours.

To freeze, spread on a tray, freeze hard, then bag. They keep their shape and pour out loose, which berries frozen in a bag never do.
